born in the snow

Born in the Snow
I made a concho today for my son
He was born yesterday
I took an advance, bought the silver
I am alone no one is home so
I work, work, work
the pattern from Bruce Harvey, Uncle Bruce
designed in 1948, now it is yours
the stamps are from your grandfather
to uncle, to me, now to you
Conchos, how many will you need
will you be like me, 12 is it
more or less
tell me my son, how tall will you be
this for you, each line is yours
let me strike straight and true
this is for you, and your son and on it goes
the line goes on through you
so small, can you see it
Simplicity, yes it is beautiful
I have to make them slowly
the right way
one by one they are made
align the mark, hit it hard and true
hit it straight,
it is stamped, a simple design
file it, shape it and make it smooth
I am a silversmith, a worker of silver
Conchos for my first born
my gift to you
it for your son
I am lucky, he is my son
You are me and I am you
Tonight dreams will come of
designs, designs
what to make of silver
what to make of turquoise
written so long ago
when my first born came along...
